proprietary softwareの意味

ソフトウェアの世界でよく"proprietary software"という言葉が使われる。Wikipediaの"Proprietary software"の項は以下のように説明している。

Proprietary software or closed source software is computer software licensed under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder with the intent that the licensee is given the right to use the software only under certain conditions, and restricted from other uses, such as modification, sharing, studying, redistribution, or reverse engineering

適当に訳すと、

プロプライエタリ・ソフトウェアというのは、権利者が独占的に法的な権利を持ったソフトのことである。ライセンスを受ける側は、定められた条件のもとでのみ使用が許可される。またライセンスを受ける側は、ソフトの改変、共有、勉強、再配布、リバースエンジニアリングに関しての権利も制限される。

となるだろうか。例えば、WindowsやiTunesは、ソースコードが開示されておらず改変もできないので、プロプライエタリなソフトウェアである。

"proprietary software"と逆の概念として、"free software"や"public domain software"が挙げられるようだ。
